The Church was designed by Joseph Clarke FSA and built in 1860 by Samuel Faram of Odd Rode and had seating for 400 people. In the time that it was built the average congregation at morning services was 350 and in the evening 250 people, in addition the Sunday school had 261 pupils. Unfortunately by 2005 the number has dimished to 64 people! The church interior has changed over the years, the photo above was taken in 1898. The font was originally by the south door, but was moved when the Baptistery was formed in 1940 to mark the Rev. Tansleys ministry at St Stephens of 25 years. The altar, which faces east (pointing to the birth place of Jesus) has three sets of stained glass windows above it, the one on the left represents Jacob blessing the children of Joseph and is inscribed with the words 'I have waited for thy salvation O Lord'. The other one is Joshua speaking to the tribes before his death, with the words 'Take heed therefore unto yourselves that you love the Lord your God'. The two windows on the right represent Job and Daniel and is inscribed 'I know that my Redeemer liveth'. |
