Looking down from the castle at the Guildhall and the church of St
Peter and St Paul, the
magnificent tower of the church stands over 30 metres and took 25 years
to complete. The Church of St Peter and St Paul stands in the shadow
of a mound on which a castle once stood (the remains are worth a look
and the mound offers a panoramic view of the town - almost a bird's
eye view, in fact). The church's 100 foot flint-encrusted tower is
described by Pevsner as 'one of the wonders of Suffolk' and the interior
is a
masterpiece
of restoration, with all the essential medieval features in place.
Inside you will find the nearest thing Suffolk has
to a fulfilment of the ecclesiological aspirations of a by-gone age.
The
rood screen with painted panels depicting St Edmund, St Ursula, Edward
the Confessor and Henry VI is particularly fine.
